Git (pronounced /ɡɪt/) is a widely used version control system designed to facilitate tracking changes in computer files and coordinating collaborative work among multiple contributors. While predominantly employed in software development for source code management, it possesses the flexibility to monitor modifications across various sets of files. Developed by Linus Torvalds in 2005 to support the development of the Linux kernel, Git benefited from contributions from other kernel developers during its initial stages. Since then, Junio Hamano has served as its primary maintainer, overseeing its evolution and stability.
Distinct from traditional client–server version control systems, Git's architecture ensures that each repository—located on individual machines—is a complete, standalone copy complete with full project history and version tracking capabilities. This design allows operations to be performed independently of network connectivity or a central server, enhancing flexibility and resilience.
As an open-source project licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2, Git remains freely available for modification and distribution by users worldwide.
